Gary Wagner Obituary

Gary A. Wagner, 87, of McClure passed away on Friday, August 1, 2025 at William Penn Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Lewistown.


He was born December 12, 1937 in McClure, a son of the late George H. and Cleo (Mattern) Wagner. On April 16, 1960 he married the former Mabel L. Leister who preceded him in death on January 1, 2019.


Gary graduated from McClure High School with the class of 1955. He then went on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Navy from 1956-1959. During his time in the Navy, he was aboard the USS Coral Sea when the ship was decommissioned after nearly 43 years of service. Gary was also on board with the first crew of the USS Midway after installation of the new angled flight deck.


He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Dormantown.


Gary worked at the Beavertown Weaving Mill and then went on to work at Standard Steel in Burnham until his retirement in 2000.


He worked security at Selinsgrove Speedway in the 70's and was a very active member for 65 years for the Bannerville Fire Company. Gary was a long-standing member of the McClure Bean Soup Committee which he took great pride in. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time at the family cabin.


Surviving are two sons, Robert A. (Tammie) Wagner and Rodney A. Wagner and his girlfriend Michele Norris; three grandchildren, Derek Wagner, Nicholas Wagner and his fiancée Madyson Forsythe, and Michaela Wagner and her fiancée Reece Bell; one great-granddaughter, Caydance Wagner.


He was preceded in death by one brother, Gene Wagner.


A viewing will be held on Friday, August 8 from 10-11 am at the Kreamer Funeral Home, 130 S. Zechman St., Beavertown followed by the funeral service at 11 with his nephew, Pastor Jeffrey Wagner officiating.


Burial with full military honors accorded by the Middlewest Veterans Honor Guard will follow in St. Mark's Lutheran Cemetery, Dormantown.
